First Period Only:

For tomorrow, you are to write a one-page paper on how a single presidential candidate can become president. This should demonstrate knowledge of the electoral process, the candidate, the candidate's platform and appeal, and the electorate. You are not expected to be a political scientist, but you are expected to be able to give a layman's view of what a candidate must do to win. See the New York Times article posted a few days ago for assistance.

Preparation for the review test

Be sure to have watched MJMfoodie's economics lessons on youtube. You can watch from scarcity to exchange rates and everything in between.

If you came to recover a test grade this morning, I will try to have those done as soon as possible. I know how many of you are counting on them. The projects are almost all graded. You should check synergy to see how your grades have been affected.

Remember that your homework is due tomorrow!

Functions of Money, Tipping Point Quiz Tomorrow

Sparknotes site on money if you missed today

Money has three main functions:
1: it is a medium of exchange
2: it is a store of value
3: it is a measure of value or unit of account

Good money is portable, durable, and divisible. Its value must be recognized. In our economy, we use fiat money, meaning it has no inherent value, but instead is functional due to its perceived value alone.

Don't forget the chapter 3 tipping point quiz tomorrow.

Tonight, students are to complete this bit of homework that is related to our classwork on the market.

The market

Today we discussed the market and its effects on so many parts of life including prices, wages, dating, and currency. We completed a worksheet on market equilibrium and shifts in demand in suppply then the students turned in their market analysis homework and took instruction on the next part of the project (supply analysis).

Expect two quizzes tomorrow! You may use handwritten notes on the tipping point quiz but no notes at all on the demand and supply quiz.

Thursday, August 13, 2015

Supply

Today, we learned the basics of supply and producer surplus. The students also had a short quiz on demand. Several of the students showed evidence of confusion between demand and production possibilities curves on these graphs, so we will be reviewing the basics of each tomorrow.

Students should read the introduction and first chapter of the tipping point before the quiz on Monday.

Our lifesim project will be introduced on Monday as well. This is the major project of the quarter.

Wednesday, August 12, 2015

Demand

Today we worked on the difference between quantity demanded and a change in demand. We also learned how to calculate consumer surplus and gave examples of ways in which businesses practice price discrimination.

We also introduced the first part of our market analysis project to be completed by Monday.

We took our first test of the quarter today. Grading is in progress. Tomorrow, we will go over the test as a class and the students will have a chance to challenge any questions they believe to be unfair or incorrect. If I have made a significant enough mistake, questions will be thrown out. Parents should expect an email regarding the test after the free response section has been graded.

Tomorrow begins our unit on Microeconomics. We will be discussing demand and creating a product on which to perform a demand analysis.

Economic Systems, the Circular Flow, and PPC Quiz

Today, we learned about economic systems and the circular flow of economic activity. We then took our first quiz on production possibilities curves. 2nd period ran short on time and will take a quiz tomorrow at the beginning of class.

Tomorrow, after a short activity covering the problems and benefits of both command and market economies, we will complete some practice on the circular flow and markets. Finally, if time allows, we will introduce marginal analysis. The students should expect a marginal analysis quiz on Thursday and a test on Friday.

Tuesday, August 04, 2015

Production Possibilities and Economic Systems

Today we covered the production possibilities curve, how it represents opportunity cost, and how it relates to marginal analysis. We also looked at how development, disease, and disasters can affect the curve.

We also had a short activity in which students pretended that they were stranded on the Alaskan coast and had to survive. Tomorrow, we will debrief this activity and use it to learn the basics of economic systems.
